The maps used for the Euratlas Historical Atlas Europe cover the earth’s surface from level 15 west to east 50, and from level 20 north to 60 north. They describe the political situation of this area on the first day of every centenary CE year from 1 to 2000. This map was corrected and redrawn in 2008 and is available as shapefile data that can be analyzed and organized spatially with GIS software. This is a 1500 map.
Each century consists of several layers provided in Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1) and in Unicode Transformation Format 8 (UTF-8): 1) Autonomous society: population without clear authority. 2) City: with name and size information for the century. 3) Diocese: eyalets or territories, the second level of administrative division consists of several provinces. 4) Sovereign_countries: all independent countries or sovereign entities, dependencies (= holder countries) belonging to their territory. 5) Holder_countries: all entities, dependent or not, depending on the region not included in the sovereign territory. 6) Province: second level of administrative division, in this system, province is the smallest unit of administrative division in the country, all other political forms result from this one. In addition the following physical layers, anonymously, are provided: big_rivers = major European rivers, fuzzy_borders = polygons representing the uncertainty of some national boundaries, rivers = major European rivers useful for historical cartography, seas = major seas and lakes. The mountains are common to all centuries and are provided as contour lines of 5 layers: mountains_200, mountains_500, mountains_1000, mountains_2000, mountains_3500. Additionally multiple Layer Style Descriptors (SLD) are included for: big_rivers, country, diocese, province, sea, small_rivers, mountains_200, mountains_500, mountains_1000, mountains_2000 and Mountains_3500. .
